Victoria Beckham's Fall 2019 Collection Is Here to Fill the Old Céline Void in Your Heart
Designers always ponder, "What do women want?" This time, Victoria Beckham might have a definitive answer.
The story of modern femininity with a timeless narrative was the order of the day for Victoria Beckham, who combined retro 1970s references, languid silhouettes and punchy colors for an aesthetic that women are so eagerly seeking these days.
Beckham seems to be taking her move back to the London Fashion Week schedule in stride. The Fall 2019 show, which took place inside the serene Tate Britain, was streamed live via colossal screens at London's Piccadilly Circus, cleverly announcing the launch of the Victoria Beckham YouTube channel. (The platform's beauty and fashion director Derek Blasberg sat front row close to Anna Wintour and the whole Beckham brood — including 7-year-old Harper, who adorably debuted a haircut nearly identical to that of the Vogue editor.)
Whether fans of VB were watching from the show space, from Piccadilly Circus or through the pixelated gaze of Instagram, the quality of the collection was undeniable. The label's signature garments (read: calf-grazing fluid dresses, spacious overcoats and roomy but elegant turtleneck knits) all took center stage, as did some rich color combinations (red and camel, maroon and baby blue) that the artist formerly known as Posh Spice tends to lean towards.
If past season's collections were a whisper of what the modern woman wants, this offering was a fully fleshed out modus operandi. "Our woman tells a story through each of the looks. She's proper but she's definitely not prim. You can feel a sense of her life through the clothes that she wears," Beckham said. And these were definitely clothes made for living; polished staples for women who seek to exude confidence for the occasion at hand in a subtle yet substantial way.
Be it a camel coat with cape sleeves paired with a pillar-box red dress and leopard print boots, or a golf jumper-style skirt suit in mohair wool with a dramatic shirt collar, Beckham artfully suggested novel and innovative ways for women to power dress. A 1970's archive chain pattern print inspired a new take on the checkered blazer, while matching, removable neckerchiefs added another dimension to silk midi dresses.
Coats also came complete with an unexpected addition — a sort of extra strap around the shoulders, ideal for those with a penchant for "shrobing" — and even tasteful black and grey ombré sequins in one instance. As for the slouchy leather over-the-knee and thigh-high peep toe boots, when the opportunity arises to get your hands on these, do not delay. They're sure to be an instant cult-status hit.
The former Spice Girl has no doubt had her work cut out for her to prove herself as a bona fide designer when she first started her eponymous luxury label. A decade later, in an age where everyone with an internet connection is able to reinvent themselves overnight and every blogger worth her salt is launching a 'brand,' Beckham should be commended for her resilience and perseverance to get to where she is now. With this collection, which would send hearts racing in the same vein as, say, Phoebe Philo's or Miuccia Prada's work would, she claims her place as a designer who innately understands how females want to dress in order to tell their own style stories.
