Viola Davis Waited Six Weeks to Call Her Husband: Find Out Why
Now, she’s confessing everything. How to Get Away With Murder star Viola Davis waited weeks before calling her husband, Julius Tennon, because she wanted to work out a personal life issue, the Emmy-winning actress told Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest on Thursday, September 28.
Davis and Tennon famously first met on the set of CBS show City of Angels. “I was like, ’He’s going to give me his [business] card, and he’s not going to have his shirt on in his card.’ But he had his shirt on.” What ultimately prompted Davis to call him was Tennon’s good looks, but she waited to pick up the phone.
“What sealed the deal was he’s cute.” she said. “And then I didn’t call him for six weeks because I was trying to work out my bad credit. I had a 500 credit score and I was really depressed… Once I knew I couldn’t work it out really fast, I was like, ‘Let me call this man.’” She adorably added, “I got lonely.”
The couple first married in 2003 in an intimate apartment ceremony with a few dozen of their closest family members and friends. Davis previously explained to Jimmy Kimmel why she married her husband three times without any splits or messy separations in between.
“I like weddings,” Davis said. “The first time we got married, there were 50 people in our condo, it wasn’t big enough. Three months later, we got married with 100 people.”
In February 2013, the couple renewed their wedding vows before 137 of their loved ones, including Oprah. “So I wanted to have a ceremony that was really pretty with the fabulous dress and the fabulous food,” the Oscar winner said. “We had the greatest food, our signature drinks. It was called the Ju-V juice.” (The tequila cocktail stood for Julius and Viola, who is oftentimes referred to by friends and family as “V.”)
These days, the couple loves to host friends at their home. “They see me in interviews and I’m super serious, and then I’m at home…” Davis told Kelly and Ryan with a face. “There will be 45 people, my husband will be in the back on the grill. Fire coming up and I’m over the stove.”
