What temperature is too hot to walk your dog?

Pet owners should avoid a walk in temperatures of 90 degrees or more, according to PetSitUSA. Most dogs are susceptible to heat stroke in temperatures over 89 degrees, but this could vary depending on the breed, size and age.

Temperatures from 81 to 88 degrees are still considered dangerous for most dogs, and walking in temperatures from 76 to 80 degrees is too high for those with a low heat tolerance.

Is pavement too hot for a pet's paws?

Yes. In certain conditions on hot days, pavement can become hot enough to cause pain or burn your dog's paw pads. Injured paw pads can become infected or matted and lead to skin issues or walking problems, according to Preventive Vet.

How long does it take a dog's paws to burn on pavement?

According to The Kennel Club, the heat of the pavement is dependent on factors like the temperature outside, wind, shade coverage and humidity. On a 77-degree day, asphalt temperatures could reach up to 125 degrees, which can cause skin damage in just 60 seconds, according to a Facebook post from Preventive Vet.

How to test if the pavement is too hot to walk your dog

According to The Kennel Club, pet owners can test the safety of the pavement by placing the back of their hand to the ground for seven seconds. Those who can do so successfully can walk their pets on the sidewalk and pavement, but if it's too hot for a person, it's too hot for their companion.
