As a mom of three young kids, I've been breastfeeding since what feels like forever. And, unfortunately, that has come with a few bouts of mastitis.
Mastitis, in case you're not familiar with it, is a painful inflammation of the breast tissue that's common in breastfeeding women. It can come with some pretty intense symptoms like breast swelling, fever and a constant burning feeling when nursing. So, when I developed symptoms the other day, I knew I had to act fast.
I called my doctor, who prescribed the antibiotic cephalexin to help me get relief from the pain that was ramping up by the second. At the last minute, though, I asked my doctor to call the prescription in to Walmart. Why? I recently got a notice that Walmart+ had launched a new service called Walmart+ Rx for less that offers up exclusive savings to Walmart+ customers on thousands of the most commonly prescribed medications.
Since I'm a Walmart+ member — and, honestly, I needed some stuff at Walmart anyway — I decided to give it a go. I was also curious to see if I could get the medication any cheaper than I would at my usual pharmacy which, unfortunately, I had gotten a prescription from for the exact same drug six months before.
My husband went to pick up the antibiotics and some other essentials (conditioner and a new beach blanket counts, right?). When he got home, he was beyond thrilled to tell me how much my medication cost: $0. That's right: It was completely free.
At my usual pharmacy, it cost $15 with my insurance. That's some pretty big savings, all for being a Walmart+ customer!
When my friends texted to check up on me, I couldn't help but brag a little. I mean, we had just saved 15 bucks! This is the deal, I explained: Walmart+ Rx for less is just for Walmart+ users, so you need to subscribe to save. And, in case you're not familiar with the service, it offers free, same-day delivery service that brings pretty much everything Walmart sells — including fresh produce —right to your door.
Walmart+ Rx for less is a new program that's part of Walmart+. It covers a massive range of prescriptions, helping you to save cash on common drugs for a huge range of health issues, like medications for heart health, mental health, antibiotics(!) and diabetes management. If you're already a Walmart+ member like me, you automatically get access to some medications for $0, and tons of other prescription drugs at discounts of up to 85 percent (not a typo) at 4,000 participating Walmart pharmacies.
Small caveat: This amazing service isn't available in all states and can't be combined with your insurance. So, it's probably a good idea to call your local Walmart first to see what the prescription medication you need will cost you. (I decided to wing it, but you never know... .) Also, the state of California doesn't support free medications, so heavily discounted medications there are just $2.
If you're interested in trying out Walmart+ for the first time, just sign up for a risk-free 15-day trial and even score two additional free weeks if you answer a brief three-question survey. Once the 30 days are up, you can continue the service for $13 per month or $98 per year. You won't get to enjoy the prescription medicine perks until you become a paying member, but if know you won't need a medication or a refill until after that time frame, it's no biggie.
The annual fee is similar to Amazon Prime but, unlike Prime, you can get things like fresh greens and other must-haves delivered to your door ASAP.
Walmart+ members also enjoy a slew of cool perks, including unlimited free delivery from stores, no shipping minimum for online orders (everyone else has to spend at least $35 to get the same deal), a mobile scan & go feature when you shop in person to allow you to check out quickly and easily, and fuel discounts of up to five cents a gallon on gas at Walmart, Sam’s Club, Murphy USA and Murphy Express gas stations.
After my amazing experience, I'm switching all of my family's medications over to Walmart+ Rx for less. I can't wait to get excited about paying $0 for prescription meds all over again!
