How to Watch All the DC Movies in Order, Including All the Justice League Spin-Offs
The next movie in the DC Extended Universe film series (DCEU for short), Wonder Woman 1984, heads to homes via HBO Max on December 25. That might mean it's time for a DCEU cramming session, so you can brush up on how the puzzle pieces of the Justice League fit together, and how they've fought evil across time. But if you can't remember your Aquaman from your Shazam!, no worries — here is a guide to watch the DC movies in order of their release. This list is based on when they hit theaters, but there's also a suggestion for how to watch so all the events are in chronological order as well.
Watching the DC movies in a row is different from watching the Marvel movies in order, though, because — for now, at least — they are even more loosely affiliated. While it's probably best to watch Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad before Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey, for example, you don't necessarily need to watch either of them to understand what's happening in Wonder Woman or Wonder Woman 1984. As the movies continue, the connections may tighten, but use this as your permission to skip if you so desire.
Also, it's important to note that this list only includes movies that are included in the current iteration of the Justice League and its assorted heroes and villains. Movies based on DC characters have been around for decades — and we've included a handy list of Superman and Batman movies for further viewing — but that doesn't mean they're all part of the DCEU. Here are the movies that are.
The current iteration of the DCEU kicks off with a Superman movie directed by Zack Snyder. In it, the Man of Steel clashes with one of the classic Superman villains, General Zod, as he struggles with whether or not to use his superhero abilities at all. Henry Cavill is the first face of the Justice League as Superman, but all of the good scenery-chewing goes to Michael Shannon's Zod.

Fans have waited a long time for The Dark Knight to come face-to-face with the Man of Steel, and they finally get their crossover in this movie. And what happens when they finally meet? The two heroes have to deduce who the bigger threat is — Lex Luthor, or each other. Here's where we also get our first real look as Ben Affleck's Batman (affectionately known as Batfleck).
Suicide Squad puts aside the big heroes for a moment and focuses more on the underbelly in this neon-colored adventure. When a supernatural threat looms, a crew of criminals — including Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, El Diablo and Killer Croc — band together for a suicide mission to save the city. Will Smith (Deadshot) and Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) are way different in this movie than in their other team-up, the charming con-artist movie Focus.

Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) may have popped up in one of the other DCEU movies before this one, but this film is all hers. In it, the Amazon warrior decides she needs to leave her sheltered home on the island pf Themyscira to help the world of men — including a new friend, Steve Trevor — which is roiling from the events of World War I.
Forget about putting Batman and Superman in one movie: Justice League combines the forces of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash. What could bring all of these "metahumans" together in one mission? The villainous Steppenwolf and his army of demons. An internet-fan-demanded director's cut is coming to HBO Max sometime in 2021, so you have another excuse to do a re-watch.
Although he already appeared in the Justice League movie, in this film fans get a more complete picture (and dripping wet) of Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa), including his origin. Curry lives on land, but is called to his undersea kingdom of Atlantis — and his birthright as its ruler — when his half-brother, Orm, declares himself Ocean Master.
The DCEU works in a lighter, sillier mode in this Zachary Levi-starring film. Billy Batson, a 14-year-old kid, gets the ability to transform into the adult superhero Shazam, which is all fun and games in a Big sort of way until he has to go up against an actual supervillain.
Harley Quinn gets extracted from the Suicide Squad for her own action-packed movie. Reeling from a breakup with "Mr. J," Harley learns to stand on her own feet again, until an even more nefarious villain named Black Mask causes her to look for an unlikely new team.
Warner Bros. announced that the follow-up to Wonder Woman would be released directly on HBO Max in addition to movie theaters on December 25. (A gift to everyone who has to stay home, no doubt!) The action shifts from World War I to the awesome '80s, but Diana Prince still finds herself up against some dark forces (namely Cheetah, played by Saturday Night Live alum Kristen Wiig).
In addition to Wonder Woman 1984, DC has announced a pile of upcoming superhero movies. It's unclear whether or not these releases will be delayed or re-shuffled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, or whether they'll hit HBO Max at the same time as theaters (though HBO has already said all of its 2021 releases will be on the streaming site at the same time as theaters). The upcoming films include:
- The Suicide Squad (August 2021)
- The Batman (March 2022)
- The Flash (November 2022)
- Aquaman 2 (December 2022)
- Shazam: Fury of the Gods (June 2023)
- Black Adam (TBD)
Luckily, the DC movie chronology isn't as scrambled as the X-Men or Marvel movies. To watch the events of the movies in chronological order, the sequence is basically the same with the Wonder Woman films pushed to the front.
- Wonder Woman
- Wonder Woman 1984
- Man of Steel
- Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice
- Suicide Squad
- Justice League
- Aquaman
- Shazam
- Birds of Prey
If you want to go further back in DC movie history, Superman became the first modern-day big-budget superhero film franchise back in 1978. Here's how to watch those movies in order — although Superman Returns ignores the existence of everything else after Superman II. The four movies starring Christopher Reeve are all currently streaming on HBO Max, while Superman Returns is on Netflix.
- Superman: The Movie (1978)
- Superman II (1980)
- Superman III (1983)
- Supergirl (1984)
- Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987)
- Superman Returns (2006)
Batman followed Superman to the big screen with two separate film series (in addition to the 1966 Adam West film and a pretty excellent animated movie from 1993, both of which are TV tie-ins) that precede the present-day DC film universe. All of these are on HBO Max except Batman Begins and The Dark Knight which are on Peacock, and The Dark Knight Rises, which is not streaming at the moment.
- Batman (1989)
- Batman Returns (1992)
- Batman Forever (1995)
- Batman & Robin (1997)
- Batman Begins (2005)
- The Dark Knight (2008)
- The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
