In a new Instagram video, Dr. Pimple Popper—aka, dermatologist and TLC host Dr. Sandra Lee, MD—removes a stone-like calcified cyst stuck in a patient’s elbow. Yes, the woman's bony elbow has a rock-hard cyst. Now that’s got to be painful.
In this removal, Dr. Pimple Popper uses a surgical punch technique to get to the hard growth buried deep beneath the skin. Then, Dr. Lee digs around in the circular opening using a pair of surgical scissors and tweezers to try and grip the cyst.
“It’s getting dodgy with us,” Dr. Lee tells the patient as she fights to get ahold of the growth.
After a few attempts, the famed dermatologist produces a calcified cyst from the woman’s elbow.
“It’s a type of cyst that we see that’s more of a rock-hard kind of cyst,” Dr. Lee tells the patient. And this growth certainly looks like a smooth, white pebble.
The cyst likely started out as an epidermoid cyst, which usually contains a collection of wet dead skin cells and keratin. But these contents can calcify, or harden, when calcium is introduced into the cyst. This type of cyst can occur on the face, neck and body.
