? The oil glands around the ear make it a fertile garden for cysts and whiteheads.
There’s not much goop or gasping in Dr. Pimple Popper’s latest Instagram video. There's just the simple pleasure of watching dermatologist Dr. Sandra Lee, MD, gently scoop out cruddy yellow-ish whiteheads from a patient's ear, and then promptly dispose of them. The squishy output from teh cysts is minimal and Lee’s voice is calm and reassuring. It’s like ASMR for those enticed by gross-out medical videos.
“I’m going to put a little pressure on you here,” says Lee, as she works her comedone extractor across the external auditory canal and then up the fossa. “Oh, they are coming out.”
As Lee mentions to the patient, the ears can be a fertile garden for pimples. The skin around them is full of oil glands, which clog, creating whiteheads, and like most acne conditions, the commonality of ear pimples peaks during puberty. Aside from keeping the ears clean, there is not much you can do about it and heavy popping on your own can rupture the eardrum. The patient here seems to have some milia, and not cysts, which can be much more intense when they grow in an ear.
