WATCH: Groom Paralyzed During Bachelor Party Ties the Knot in Beautiful Atlanta Wedding

Meg Alexander and Brett Greenhill’s joint bachelor/bachelorette party should have been one of the best weekends of their lives. Surrounded by friends and family, everybody was having a blast, Meg recalled. But that all changed the moment Brett jumped into the ocean after a game of football on the beach.

“Brett went into the water and all of a sudden my friend Kelsey says, ‘Why is Brett doing that? Why is he floating like that?’ ” Meg told People a few days later. “I was like, ‘I don’t know, he’s a goofball’ and she went to check on him.”

But he wasn’t goofing around. He’d hit his head on a sandbar and was paralyzed from the waist down. Brett was airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers, where doctors told Meg that her future husband had a one percent chance of mobility.

That was less than a year ago. The past several months have been a “rollercoaster” for the Atlanta-based couple, but through it all, their love and commitment to each other never wavered. And somehow, between doctor's appointments and physical therapy, they still managed to plan their Southern-vintage themed wedding. On September 9, Meg and Brett finally got the chance to say “I do.”

All they’d been through only made their day that much sweeter. “It was the most exciting and special day,” Meg, 30, recently told People. “Especially after everything that’s happened. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.”

Brett is confined to a wheelchair, but he’s made huge strides since that fateful December weekend in Naples. He’s regained some arm strength and wrist movement. And because he’s an incomplete quadriplegic, there is a chance he’ll continue to gain mobility, People reports.

“When you set a goal, sometimes it takes a little longer to get there than you anticipated, but if you work hard together you can make it happen,” Meg told People. “They say for better for worse, for richer for poorer — and I guess we got that out of the way early.”

Now husband and wife, the Greenhill’s have a new set of goals. His first is to move from a power wheelchair to a manual one, which will give him more independence. But according to People, their biggest goal of all is to grow their family.

“Everything changed, but we’re still just as determined to live the life we wanted for ourselves,” added Brett.

“One thing that we’ve really been trying to do is just to keep each other positive,” noted Meg. “Some days are really bad for me and Brett will kind of talk me down the ledge and bring me back to reality. It’s the same for him. On his bad days I try to lift him up.”
Despite it all, their future looks bright.

“It looks different than we thought it would, but who actually ever thinks life is going to turn out the way they think it is?” Meg concluded.
