How to watch The Walking Dead: Dead City and when is it coming to the UK?
When the credits rolled at the end of season 11 of AMC's The Walking Dead we were left in no doubt that, while the run was officially over, there were plenty more stories yet to come. And that the best televisions and streaming devices around would feature the continuing adventures of some of the biggest characters.
Not wishing to spoil it too much if you've yet to see episode 24 of that "final" season, there is now a trio of spinoffs, each featuring some true fan favourites โ including The Walking Dead: Dead City.
Season 1 reunites Negan (Jeffrey Dead Morgan) and his previously sworn enemy Maggie (Lauren Cohan) in a six-part series that picks up their journey after the events of the main show.
The entire season aired in 2023 the US, but what about the UK? Can we expect to see it soon? Here's what we know about The Walking Dead: Dead City, the trailer, and UK plans.
What is The Walking Dead: Dead City?
There have been a few Walking Dead spinoff shows over the years, with sister series Fear the Walking Dead being the most famous. However, The Walking Dead: Dead City is the first of three sequels. The others are The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon and The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live.
Back to Dead City though, it continues the story of Negan and Maggie โ two former rivals (after all, killing one's husband is bound to cause some animosity) who join forces to rescue Maggie's son, Hershel. It is set amongst the crumbling cityscapes in Manhatten and, as the title suggests, features plenty of peril from zombies and bandits alike.
It's a six-part series and features a completely new plot. The Walking Dead itself was loosely based on the comic books by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard.
A second season is also on its way.
When did The Walking Dead: Dead City start?
The Walking Dead: Dead City aired in the US last year โ starting on AMC+ on 15 June 2023, and then on the main AMC channel on 18 June.
When will the The Walking Dead: Dead City be available in the UK and where?
Although it has taken a year, and you'll have to wait a little longer still, Sky has announced that it has signed the exclusive UK rights to The Walking Dead: Dead City and the other two spinoffs, so will be making them available on its multiple platforms, starting at the end of May 2024.
It will also make all 11 seasons of The Walking Dead available on demand on Sky Glass, Sky Stream, Sky Q and Now from 19 May.
Perhaps surprisingly, Sky's plans will reverse the order of the spinoffs, making The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live the first to air, from 31 May.
That will then be followed by season 1 of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, which is currently planned for August (with season 2 also coming later in 2024).
Finally, The Walking Dead: Dead City season 1 will be available on Sky and Now "later in 2024". Season 2 will then arrive in 2025.
The timings might be a little odd, considering they originally broadcast in the opposite order in the States, but we're just glad their finally coming to this side of the pond.
The Walking Dead: Dead City trailer
While we wait for the UK debut of The Walking Dead: Dead City outside the US, here's a tasty trailer to whet your appetite even more.
Is there a The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2?
Even though Dead City was originally intended to be a one-off mini-series, it was confirmed last year that a second season is coming.
Speaking during the San Diego Comic Con in July 2023, the president of AMC, Dan McDermott, said, "We can't wait to bring Dead City fans back to the epicenter of Manhattan for more zip-lining action with Maggie and Negan."
