We tried Amazon's bestselling one-piece swimsuits — see which impressed us most

Have you ever seen a tummy-control swimsuit this chic? Not only is there ruching along the sides to create a slimming effect, there's a criss-cross neckline and sexy cutout to give it a fashion-forward feel. Our Senior Health Commerce Writer, Laura Williams, tested it out. She loved how comfortable it was and said she appreciated how easy it was to move around in. Despite its sultry cut-out and open back, she said it was "a great suit for water activities." Though maybe not for intense water sports, but for a casual active day, she found it perfect.

Williams said the suit supported her bust nicely, which was a bonus since she is still nursing a 1-year-old, and she liked that the back of the suit stayed put and provided ample coverage. "I have a bigger bottom and prefer more coverage, and this suit delivered," she said. She did say she wished the suit offered a bit more lift in the backside. The one-piece ranges in size from XS to 22 Plus and it comes in 32 colors and patterns. Williams said it's so stylish, you may want more than one in your summer rotation.

This ruffled silhouette will look great on all shapes and sizes thanks to the flattering ruching on the tummy area and the lace-up ties at the back that Garrity said allow you to find a comfortable fit. Ross noted that the front is quite low-cut, so if you prefer more coverage, this isn’t the suit for you. But she loved the medium coverage the bottom provided. "It wasn't riding up my butt, but also didn't make me feel frumpy," she said.

While Garrity loved the ruffles, Ross found them a tad too big as a very petite person, but she still said the suit was cute and flattering. Neither had issues with the suit becoming uncomfortable or see-through when wet. And they found it perfect for lounging or low-impact water activities. Both did note that they wouldn't wear it for more intense activities because of the low neckline.

This sleek, classic maillot by Cupshe features a V-neck, high-cut sides and ruching that smooths out your midsection. Home Editor Lisa Schweitzer said, "There was less bottom coverage than I assumed there would be, but it was actually flattering." She also felt supported in the bust, even though the one-piece doesn't have built-in cups or thick straps. Ross agreed, saying, "When I first put it on, I was worried that it was too low-cut and that my boobs looked floppy. But once I adjusted the straps, it gave me the lift I was looking for and raised the cut. The bottom was just right for me — medium coverage with a high-cut leg that gave my 5-foot-tall self a more elongated appearance."

Both found the ruched midsection flattering and said it gave a sort of camouflage effect, but they didn't notice much tummy control otherwise. Overall, they said that if you're looking for a simple yet chic silhouette, this is a great choice. "It doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles, but I prefer a more minimalist suit," Ross said. "I really like the classic silhouette and the lower-cut chest area, though it's certainly not a plunging neckline. The Amazon photo seems exaggerated."

Its modest silhouette, scoop neck and side-tie knot skirt are just a few of the reasons why this suit has racked up a near-perfect rating on Amazon. Senior Operations Analyst Amanda Rickert and Deals Writer Carrie McCabe are both fans of the curve-hugging swim dress, though they did wish it was a bit more supportive overall. "Coverage is pretty good," McCabe said. "I was more interested in covering the upper thighs and backside area so I didn't wear it tied up at the bottom; I do wish it was a little longer, it does feel a little short for a typical swim dress. But I'm fairly bootylicious, so those who are a little smaller might not have that problem."

Rickert noted that while the suit felt snug in the midsection, it didn't feel like there was active control. "There is no fabric bunching that appears to be doing anything, so no illusion either," she said. The extra coverage the skirt provides gave her more reassurance to take part in water activities without feeling exposed. She said that while part of the back is sheer when wet, the front is lined and the skirt around the bottom prevents you from showing off anything you don't want to be seen.

I tested out this Cupshe suit and loved the modern feel of this square-neck one-piece — and that the strappy back gave it a fashion-forward twist. The ruching in the midsection gives a flattering effect, but I did wish it had more compression to suck me in. I found the swimsuit very comfortable when wet and dry, and the straps were easy to adjust to find my ideal fit.

Garrity has also been testing this sleek swimsuit, and she loved that the straight neckline meant no cleavage spilling out. However, both of us found that the lining from the inside of the suit sometimes folded over the top, which was annoying to have to adjust. Other than that, the suit stayed in place and both of us would feel comfortable wearing it during any water activity without worrying about feeling exposed. We also thought the simple design makes it a great layering piece to wear under shorts or a skirt too, so you can easily go from the beach to the bar.

This suit claims to have all the coverage you want, plus mesh paneling for a touch of sex appeal, though when put to our tests, it fell quite short. While Commerce Editor Janelle Randazza said the suit "held up my B-cup girls well," Executive Editor Nicole Sforza noted that the mesh parts fell in odd places and caused underboob to show. Neither found it comfortable enough for water sports, with Sforza saying, "It's more for lying on a lounge chair."

The backside of the suit was an issue for Randazza. "The thighs are slit so low that the butt I've been working on all winter with squats and bike rides looks 2 inches lower and 5 inches wider. Plus, I don't have particularly long legs. It made me look like I had stumps," she said. 

This sophisticated halter-top features a sexy plunging neckline, removable cups and flattering ruching on the front. "This was surprisingly comfortable, given the plunging neckline! I didn't feel like it shifted around; fit like a glove and the material felt smooth and thick enough to provide coverage," said Sforza, who opted for the bright red option. She said she got several compliments when wearing the suit, which she paired with a sarong. "The suit showed off the girls, if you will, but I never felt afraid that I'd slip out. It pushed them up nicely, just as advertised. I was surprised how nice it was. The bottom coverage was fine — a tad cheeky, but in a good way," she said.

Rickert also tested the suit and said that while she was comfortable with the cut of the bottom, she did want to note that "at least half your cheek is always going to be exposed." She said the halter was supportive enough at the bust for light activities but mentioned she wished there was more tummy control. "It says tummy control on the listing, but it's not doing any active tummy control for me (the feel is hugging but not flattening or redistributing anything) — most of the tummy control is more illusion from the ruching and the suit being black, I think in any other color there wouldn't be much of an effect." She also said it made her look a bit bulky on the sides, but overall, she found it pretty figure-flattering.

The one-shoulder silhouette here lends a sophisticated touch, while the cut-out adds a hint of sex appeal. Randazza said it was very easy to move around in without feeling exposed — it was even diving board-proof! "The coverage was just enough so that I could still run around like a fourth-grader on field day. I love to body surf and dive, and this suit totally held up and kept me covered," she said. While there is slimming ruching around the tummy, Randazza said she didn't really feel much compression or added tummy control. "My husband didn't love the ruching, but I like having a bathing suit I can gorge myself on nachos in and not show a surprise belly bulge," she added.

Schweitzer found the black version very figure-flattering, but the material wasn't as soft or as smooth as she had anticipated. "It's sophisticated and has the look of a much more expensive suit from the front, but the straps in the back are not as sleek," she said. Overall she liked that it provided good coverage and support without pinching or constricting, but she said the sizing seemed to run a bit small.

This is the second swim dress on the list that McCabe tried; she gave this option a slight edge over the Eomenie style because she found the neckline more flattering for a bigger bust. The backside of the suit rode up at times, but the skirt kept everything covered, she said. However, she did note that she wished it was "a little longer in the back — even a 'mullet' type cut would be beneficial." Commerce Managing Editor Katelyn Mullen found the back coverage great but said "the bust coverage was a little less than perfect."

"I am pear-shaped, with a larger bottom and a pretty small chest. In order to wear swimsuits comfortably on my bottom, they are often too big on top. Though these straps were comfortably adjustable and making them snug didn't hurt my shoulders, the cups in the bra section were not removable, therefore they had quite a bit of space between the fabric and my body," Mullen noted. Otherwise, she found the suit comfortable. "I wore it for a full day at the pool, chasing my two small kids around, and I was not fidgeting or fixing it," she said. She also loved that it dried very quickly for a swim dress and she got a ton of compliments on it. "I had four different women at my community pool stop me to tell me they liked my swimsuit and ask where I got it from," she said.

Sforza said this sleek halter one-piece "hugs my curves in a good way." Her bust felt supported even though she would consider this low neckline fairly "sexy," and she was able to move freely without showing too much. Williams said she loved the bust and the high-cut leg but wished there was more booty coverage. But she found the swimsuit comfortable and said it didn't pinch or constrict.

Both loved how sleek and stylish the halter neck design was but wished they had chosen a different color or pattern. Williams ordered the dark blue but would have loved a bright teal, orange or yellow for summer. Sforza said, "I made the mistake of buying this in leopard — that was my husband's call — but I felt like a Real Housewife in it. I think this suit is better in a solid color."
