Wednesday’s Child: Meet Alex, a teen dreaming of his future & the trust of family
Hundreds of kids are waiting in foster care hoping to be adopted. We at KARK are hoping to help these kids find loving homes through our Wednesday’s Child Series.
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Trust means everything. Sadly, so many kids in the foster care system have lost it after being let down by the people who were supposed to love and protect them.
This week’s Wednesday’s Child is a teenager who is wary but hopeful about finding a family he can believe in and who will believe in him.
Alex, 17, has big plans to go far in life, especially in a career.
“Welding. I want to weld or build stuff like houses, architecture,” he said of his future plans with a deep voice and physical strength can sometimes make you forget he’s still just a kid. “I like to play video games, play basketball, I like to go outside.”

He’s a teenager who wants the one thing that feels so out of reach, a family. When asked about what he wants in a family, he was at a loss for words.
“I don’t really know. I don’t know how to explain it,” Alex said.
The teen has been in the foster care system for ten long years, making him doubt that one day he’ll finally be adopted.
“He really does want a family, but I don’t think he wants to appear as much that he wants a family so that he doesn’t get hurt,” adoption specialist Ashleigh Smith said.
Smith said Alex has experienced his fair share of rejection and abandonment and has been let down by those who were supposed to take care of him.
“It can be very defeating,” she explained. “They learn not to trust anybody that they should be able to trust because they’ve been let down so many times in the past.”
It will take time for Alex to let his guard down. Unfortunately, time is the one thing he’s running out of. When asked what his superpower would be, Alex said, “Time stop. Basically, I can mess with time.”
