There Were Truly So Many Dicks on 'Euphoria' Last Night
? Euphoria's much-discussed "30 penises" episode aired on Sunday night.
? Episode two of the HBO teen drama certainly delivered what was promised!
? Euphoria airs Sunday nights on HBO.
There was a cavalcade of controversy in the lead-up to the premiere of HBO's Euphoria, most of it stemming from the show's intense sexual content and prominent depiction of drug use. Amid this conversation, one detail consistently rose above the rest: a single episode of the teen drama would feature something in the range of 30 naked penises on screen.
This detail led many to react with disbelief-but that state of disbelief didn't last too long, because it only took until the second week for our friends at Euphoria to deliver the dick-pocalypse that was promised. That's right: Episode two, "Stuntin' Like My Daddy," waited a mere couple of minutes before unleashing all kinds of dong into our living rooms.
The story behind the legendary phallic display goes like this: Every episode of Euphoria focuses on a different character, and this week was Nate Jacobs' turn. Nate is a pretty stereotypical jock, but with some wrinkles: he's got violent tendencies and an unpredictable temperament, and he's got some skeletons in his closet, rooted in his childhood discovery of his father's secret sexual proclivities: having sex with young men and transgender women, and filming it to keep in his own personal collection.
Once we get caught up with present-day Nate-now the quarterback and captain of the football team-we learn that while Nate loves the sport and the competition, he's uneasy about the nonchalant nature of his teammates being naked in the locker room. It's here that we get our gratuitous penis shots.
And oh boy, do we get them. Group shots, individual shots, long shots, close ups-everything you can imagine, Euphoria has got it. This sequence was the Olympics of schlongs. The World Series of wieners. This was an event, and there isn't much argument there.
It had a good run, but it seems, inadvertently or not, that creator Sam Levinson was coming for Superbad's dick scene throne. Or was it Forgetting Sarah Marshall's dick scene throne? Either way, there's little argument: The hierarchy of cinematic phallic moments has been re-arranged, and Euphoria sits above all else.
And guess what? It still has six more weeks to top itself.
