Nicole Kidman has come a long way since her first feature film role in the Australian drama “Bush Christmas.” Her acting credits in movies like “Practical Magic,” “Moulin Rouge!” “The Hours,” “Boy Erased,” and “Lion” (not to mention that by-now-iconic AMC Theaters commercial) have secured her the unofficial title of everyone’s favorite Australian, and it’s safe to say that the star is currently as relevant as she’s ever been. Kidman’s constant presence in the public eye is also great news for fashion lovers, who seem to be quite inspired by her elegant and smart style sensibilities. The backless, rhinestone-embroidered dress she wore at the 2025 Golden Globes, for instance, has been the talk of the town ever since her appearance on the red carpet.

The actress holds so much cultural sway that her on-screen style, too, is just as lust-worthy as what she wears in everyday life. Playing the wealthy matriarch Greer Garrison Winbury in Netflix’s buzzy show “The Perfect Couple,” her snappy suits and pale blue dresses were the objects of much adoration. Kidman’s most recent role in the movie “Babygirl,” starring as a high-achieving CEO who has an affair with her much-younger intern (which secured her a Golden Globes nomination, albeit without a win, for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama) Kidman’s outfits include Armani suits, flowy silk blouses, and many a pencil skirt. One detail, however, stands out in particular.
In many scenes, Kidman’s character can be spotted wearing a Monica Rich Kosann charm necklace with the brand’s “Adventure” compass charm in white enamel and blue sapphire, as well as the “Anna” locket, which can hold two images inside. The necklace pops impeccably against the background of her color-blocked clothing.
Similar to the “Easter eggs” devoted viewers find in popular films — often alluding to their plot, serving as cheeky pieces of foreshadowing, or encapsulating a character’s arc — an actor’s costume wardrobe (which includes jewelry picks, of course) can say a lot with very little.
“Jewelry in film can be tricky, it can broadcast too loudly or be a distraction, but it can also be a powerful part of character-building and storytelling,” Bart Mueller, the costume designer working on Kidman’s wardrobe for “Babygirl” as part of the designer duo Kurt and Bart, tells WWD. “Nicole Kidman’s character in ‘Babygirl’ was scripted as wearing a compass pendant and as soon as we found the beautiful Monica Rich compass, we knew we had found the piece.”

All of this, as it turns out, is quite in line with how Monica Rich Kosann operates. “I’m a storyteller,” the portrait photographer-turned-jewelry designer told WWD back in 2011. “I help my clients tell their stories.” Heirloom-quality pieces from her line — especially the gold and silver photo lockets and whimsical charm necklaces, not to mention the engravable and design-your-own options — are ideal for channeling the wearers’ personalities. This makes Monica Rich Kosann an easy choice for collaborations on costume jewelry in films, where fictional personalities and stories couldn’t play a more important role.
The motivations of Kidman’s character, Romy Mathis, are captured brilliantly by the compass-plus-locket combination. “The compass is part of the character Romy’s story who is trying to keep the course as she navigates new territory,” says Kurt Swanson, the second member of the Kurt and Bart partnership. The movie explores the morality and repercussions of dating well below your age group as a woman — a married and working one, at that — so Mathis’ moral compass is subtly symbolized through the object.
Rich Kosann, being in the business of the bespoke, took it all one step further. “She was also able to help build out more of that backstory with a locket engraved with the initials of each of Romy’s two daughters’ names. Besides being beautiful jewelry that feels right for the character, it is the kind of detail that an actor and designers love,” Swanson shares.
Mueller and Swanson’s wardrobe selects make a similarly powerful statement. Mathis’ love interest, for example, wears cruder, more ill-fitting clothing that creates a kind of visual tension with her own elegantly tailored and expensive styles. This, in turn, signals a kind of power disparity at play, with Mathis being in a position of dominance. We’re not in the business of spoilers here at WWD, but it’s safe to say all this changes throughout the course of the movie.
As far as that covetable charm necklace goes, it’s eye candy to the max. An 18-inch, 18-karat gold chain gracefully branches off into the compass and locket charms, which can be taken off at will and thus allow for stylish versatility. Indeed, those looking for a simpler and more streamlined silhouette can opt for just the Monica Rich Kosann Petite “Anna” Gold Locket Necklace or the Mini “Adventure” Compass Charm with White Enamel, sold separately.
Grabbing your own pendant or charm necklace will not only help you honor your love for all things Nicole Kidman but also ensure your jewelry is as on-trend as can be. The hashtag #charmnecklace has so far garnered over 56k posts on TikTok, with many videos (informally known as “necklace charm tours”) racking up views in the hundred thousands. Creating personalized charm necklaces — a service now offered by more and more jewelry brands in brick-and-mortar as well as online capacities — is clearly a hot pursuit. The search term #pendantnecklace, too, is quite popular, with over 16k posts to its name.
This fascination is not solely homespun, though, as it’s also appeared in the fall 2024 and spring 2025 runway collections of multiple luxury fashion houses. Chloé’s spring 2025 ready-to-wear show in Paris was case in point, during which models sported boho-inspired pendant necklaces that varied in length and layering. At Paris Fashion Week, jewelry brands also demonstrated playfulness via charms and pendants. Of particular note is the D’heygere x Vaquera collaboration, showcasing thick link chains with charms like keys, coins, cigarettes, and lighters available as add-ons.
Besides being a self-gift that will keep on giving, personalized jewelry holding actual meaning makes for a lovely, timeless treat for a wife or girlfriend. In particular, Monica Rich Kosann’s masterful creations lend themselves well to this category of giftees, so much so that we highlighted her White Enamel Vermeil Cushion Locket Necklace in our guide to the best gifts for women in 2023.
With Cupid Day being the next major holiday to look forward to, the “Adventure” Compass and “Anna” Locket Charm Necklace from Monica Rich Kosann will also serve as a romantic Valentine’s Day gift she’ll be unlikely to forget (those looking for more affordable options will be happy to know the brand offers personalized necklaces at many price points).
Or, defying the convention that gifts are reserved only for holidays, use it to surprise and delight the “babygirl” in your life — any day of the year.
