Who Wore It Best: Gigi Hadid or a Wall?

When we first saw the look above, worn by Gigi Hadid at Balmain’s fall 2016 show Thursday at Paris Fashion Week, we felt a pang of recognition. Like the narrator in Swann’s Way biting into a madeleine, something about the dress’s multitude of swinging tassels brought a distant memory, perhaps from our childhoods, bubbling up to just under the surface of our consciousness. And yet, we couldn’t quite place it…

Until we saw this dress and realized that Olivier Rousteing has designed a collection inspired by that most zeitgeisty of home decor items: the macramé wall hanging. Yes, the one your mom had hanging on her wall — if your mom was an eccentric pottery teacher who also kept a large collection of ferns.

Like this one, available at Urban Outfitters (in case you needed proof that this super-’70s trend is once again picking up steam amongst the Youths).

The wall-hanging dress is also available in a very au courant baby pink.

Echoing this ombré wall hanging, also from UO.

Not all of Balmain’s looks sported an absurd number of tassels. Some pants sported an absurd number of ruffles — in case you’ve ever wanted saddlebags that blow gently in the breeze.

Ruffly shirts also made an appearance, for those who do, after all, want to be a pirate.

So, not this guy, obviously.

Other outfits sported an absurd number of feathers.

Or an absurd number of Kendall Jenners looking exactly like Kim Kardashians. Cheers to Rousteing for another successful season!
