Why Anya Taylor-Joy Skipped the 2021 Oscars
The Queen’s Gambit’s Anya Taylor-Joy has been an award show darling over the 2021 awards season. So why isn't she at the Oscars tonight—or individually nominated at all at the ceremony? It's simply because the Academy Awards recognizes film achievement rather than TV or TV miniseries. There are no Oscar categories for which Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit is eligible. Taylor-Joy’s 2020 film Emma did get nominations for Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling though, although that hardly mandates Taylor-Joy going to the Academy Awards during a pandemic.
Taylor-Joy has had an incredible award season run for The Queen’s Gambit, though: She won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Miniseries or Television Film, the Screen Actors Guild award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Miniseries or Television Movie, and the Critics’ Choice Awards for Best Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie.
And Taylor-Joy’s red carpet fashion has been just as wondrous, thanks to the work of her stylist Law Roach. Taylor-Joy dressed in emerald green Dior for the Golden Globes:

Taylor-Joy did an interview with Vanity Fair last month, where she discussed how she felt post-Golden Globes win.
“Is it awful to say I don’t think about it?” she started quietly. “Look, any kind of recognition for your work is wonderful and truly moving, but I have to show up for my movie and my director and my friends. If I were consistently thinking about things like that, I don’t know how healthy my mind would be.”
“I want to be quite clear about something, which is when I say, ‘I walk away’ or ‘I don’t think about it anymore,’ it’s never because I’m ungrateful for any of it,” she clarified. “I just really think that I won’t be able to do my best work if I start believing I’m anything more than human, because people watch characters for the humanity. You have to have a connection to real life. If you don’t have a true heart and a true place of emotions to come from, how on earth are you going to give life to a character?”
