Why Kelsea Ballerini Is Cautious of Having Famous Friends

Kelsea Ballerini shared the valuable lesson she learned ahead of entering her 30s.

In a new interview with Nylon, the country star said that during her 20s, she realized how valuable it is to form genuine connections, noting the importance of "investing in the things that you care about, and having better, more fulfilling healthier relationships. Less of them, but better."

She recalled that right before this year's VMAs, she celebrated her 30th birthday on Sept. 12 with a getaway to St. John, accompanied by close girlfriends she's known since she was a teen.

"My ride-or-dies that have no skin in the game for me in my career," said Ballerini. She then admitted, "I have less famous friends than I ever have."

The "This Feeling" singer confessed that when starting out in her career and had the opportunity to be in the same room with people she admired growing up, she was "so starry eyed and very magnetized to it."

She noted, "There was definitely part of my drive that [wanted to] be in one of those rooms. And I would like to think that’s just human nature, but I hate that that was part of my drive. Because it's not pure."

She acknowledged that her younger self was very interested in hanging out with big names because of how famous they were, but realized that mingling with celebrities wasn't as emotionally satisfying as one may think. "It just didn't feed my soul at all. I just ended up having some disappointments and shifted into my real life again," said Ballerini.

However, the Grammy-nominated artist said there are some celebrities that remain part of her inner circle.

One of them is Riverdale alum Lili Reinhart, whom she met at the Venice Film Festival. According to Reinhart, the two bonded over their "discomfort in these situations where you're surrounded by people who are buying everyone shots and trying to impress you with their connections and money." Fellow Riverdale alum Camila Mendes also mentioned in the interview that she became friends with Ballerini because of how "grounded" and "unpretentious" the singer is.
