Why MAC's Latest Photos Are Getting an Insane Amount of Attention Right Now

Embracing natural, non-photoshopped beauty has become a movement praised and beloved by many. It’s nice to see brands and influencers showcase women’s real beauty instead of some fake, filtered version of it that doesn’t exist, which is why MAC's latest photos are getting a ton of attention right now.

In its recent Instagram posts, the mega-popular brand has stopped erasing facial hair from their photos and has started showing off the natural peach fuzz on their model’s faces. Unlike most other close-up shots by makeup artists or models, these photos clearly did not go through a skin-perfecting app to smooth out or blur facial hair.

On the brand’s UK account, MAC posted a photo of a pigmented brown lipstick that was shot by makeup artist Anna Donegan. In the photo, there are small, blond hairs seen around the lips.

"So good to see a makeup image that hasn’t been photoshopped to within an inch of its life," wrote one commenter in response to the image.

"This really does mean a lot to a lot of us women. No one ever leaves natural facial hair on makeup models. That's why I felt so super self conscious about my little mustache hairs when I was younger," wrote another. "If all you're seeing are completely hairless women, you're going to believe that and only that is considered ‘normal,’ ‘acceptable,’ or ‘beautiful.’ Keep showing young women that we're all beautiful."

Another similar image—created by makeup artist Matthew King—was posted to their U.S. account. However, not everyone was as supportive of the visible upper lip hair this time around. “Those hairs on upper lips, demand to [be] plucked,” one Instagrammer wrote. "She has a mustache, please photoshop the whiskers," wrote another one.

Although, it wasn’t all negative feedback. One person wrote, "Gorgeous! And I love that the model has little facial hair." While another said, "I'm glad to see hair on a lip, not just mine."

These mixed emotions prove just how much image altering tools like Photoshop have inserted themselves into the mentality of our society. "Flawless perfection" is the standard expectation on many social media posts because it’s so ingrained into our mindset that this is what's considered beautiful. Ultimately, it's refreshing to see something real from a major brand like MAC because it normalizes something all of us have: facial hair. The photos are just images showcasing beautiful shades of lipsticks and the model just happens to have a bit of facial hair in the shot. And truthfully, there’s nothing wrong with that.
