Why Prince Philip's Appearance at Ella Windsor's Wedding Today Is Something of a Surprise
The royal family has no lack of things to celebrate this month. Of course, little Archie Harrison arrived earlier this month, and tomorrow is the Sussexes' first anniversary, but today marks the wedding of Queen Elizabeth's first cousin once removed, Lady Gabriella Windsor.
Prince Michael's daughter, who goes by Ella, is marrying her fiancé Thomas Kingston in St George's Chapel of Windsor Castle this afternoon. Several members of the royal family are in attendance at the nuptials today, including not only Ella's parents Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, but also the Queen, Prince Philip, Princess Anne, Prince Harry, and Princess Beatrice, among others.
The British monarch just arrived at the ceremony, wearing a bright pink ensemble, alongside her husband, Prince Philip. The Duke of Edinburgh has been seen out and about quite a bit recently-meeting his new great grandson Archie, accompanying the Queen to the Order of Merit lunch, and carriage driving on the grounds of Windsor Castle-but the nearly 98-year-old's appearance at today's royal wedding is still something of a surprise, as it wasn't announced ahead of time, only the Queen's attendance was.
In October of last year, ahead of Princess Eugenie's wedding, the Telegraph reported that Philip "now operates on a 'wake up and see how I feel' basis."
"The royals are like any family in the sense they try to make family occasions but it is not always possible," a source told the publication.
But clearly he was feeling up for it today!
