Why server called customer 'fat, gay' on his receipt: 'It was just her way of describing him'
A server at a newly-opened restaurant in Houston, Texas has been terminated for calling a customer "fat" and "gay" on his receipt.
The customer, who wished to remain anonymous, spoke with KTRK regarding the incident that left him feeling confused and hurt.
The man visited Plush Daiquiri Bar and Grill, which, according to its social media accounts, opened in April. It wasn't until the customer spent a few hours in the establishment that he noticed the phrase "to go dude with dreads, fat, gay," written on his receipt.
"I don't even know her, she don't know me," the customer said. "That's like stereotyping, for her to not even know and say fat, gay and this and that."
While the customer claims to have no ill-will toward the restaurant, he does not plan to return.
"If anybody asked about it I would tell them, it's a good restaurant. I have nothing bad to say about the restaurant. I just will not go back," he said.
Marcus Barlow, who co-owns the restaurant with Leighton Dickson, told the Houston news station that the female server was incredibly apologetic and that she was not aware the description she used to identify the customer would be revealed on the receipt.
"It was just her way of describing him. It wasn't anything against him or anything personal. It was her way of referencing back who to deliver the food to," Barlow said.
"She was unaware that he could see it and she was very apologetic to us about it and she was disciplined. We do no discriminating at all at Plush," Dickson added.
The female server involved in the incident was initially given a three-day suspension while the restaurant performed an investigation. Barlow confirmed to Yahoo Lifestyle that the employee has since been terminated.
