Why Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas' Custody Battle Will Continue Into 2024

Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas will reportedly start a four-day mediation on Wednesday, Oct. 4 to establish a concrete custody and parenting plan for their daughters Willa and Delphine.

People notes that during a hearing held on Oct. 3, a judge set Jan. 2, 2024 as the trial date for the former couple's custody battle. The mediation is expected to help the parents figure out the best course of action for their children beforehand.

It's noted that Turner's lawyer Stephen Cullen stated that the musician is seeking joint custody. Cullen added, "The parties are both seeing their children, which is what we all want."

According to ET Online, Jonas was unable to be there as he is currently on tour with the Jonas Brothers in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Turner, however, was able to attend the trial virtually.

The report also sheds light on how the date for the trial was selected, as Jonas and Turner had very different requests. Turner's attorneys asked for the trial to end "as soon as possible" due to the actress' work obligations in the UK. Meanwhile, Jonas' lawyers wanted the trial to start later on, as his final tour date is on Dec. 9, and they have an in-person divorce hearing on Dec. 14

Jonas' attorneys also mentioned during the hearing that the custody trial is expected to last at least four days, as the singer and the Game of Thrones alum "have several witnesses to call to stand."

In late September, Turner filed a suit alleging that Jonas had confiscated their daughters' passports with the intention of not allowing the actress to take the girls back home to the UK. She claimed that before their separation, she and Jonas had agreed that England would become their permanent home.

Jonas denied her claims, noting that the children legally cannot go back to the UK, as it would violate their Florida court order, as he initiated divorce proceedings in that state.
