The Yellowstone prequel show 1883 may not debut until next month, but we've already gotten our first look at some of the show's main characters, courtesy of the Yellowstone season 4 premiere.
As Yellowstone grappled with the fallout from its dramatic season 3 cliffhangers in the first part of its big 2-part debut, it offered up a brief glimpse into the world that awaits fans in 1883—albeit slightly down the road from where the story will begin. Early on in the first episode, we see a flashback scene set in March 1893—10 years after 1883 is set to begin. The flashback takes place on the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, confirming that at least within a year of the Duttons setting out for Montana, they'll have established their homestead.
The scene also features the screen debut of Tim McGraw as James Dillard Dutton, the family patriarch and grandfather to Yellowstone's John Dutton. In the scene, James and two of his young sons—Charlie Stover as Spencer Dutton and Jack Michael Doke as the future John Dutton Senior—encounter a group of Indigenous People on the ranch who ask Dutton's permission of bury one of their elders on the property. Though the conversation is cordial, and James provides the group with a steer to ensure they're fed, fans of Yellowstone know that the tensions between the Dutton family and the Native American tribes on Montana is far from over.
1883 will premiere on Paramount+ on Sunday, December 19.
