YES: The Magic School Bus Is Finally Back
Grab your permission slips and fasten your seat belts because "The Magic School Bus" is back! Netflix just released the trailer for its reboot,"The Magic School Bus Rides Again," set for streaming on Sept. 29.
Walkerville School students (Liz the lizard included) go on the same wild adventures exploring the vast corners of the sea and stars, but there are some notable changes this time around. Here's what to expect from the Scholastic Media revival.
Lin-Manual Miranda of Tony Award-winning Hamilton sings the theme song - and ultimately nails it. While Lily Tomlin still voices Ms. Frizzle, she's retiring her magic keys. SNL-native Kate McKinnon takes over the steering wheel as Ms. Fiona Felicity Frizzle, the teacher's younger sister (yep, she's got the fiery hair too).
Though not mentioned in the trailer, back in January, producer Stu Stone told TMZ that there would be more famous faces (or voices, rather). In fact, he said there's a whole generation who grew up with the series wanting in on the heavily-anticipated reboot. We can't blame them - as one of PBS's first animated shows, it was among the highest-rated.
Frizzle's trusted, aerodynamic vehicle even got an upgrade. It will be equipped with modern robotics and today's technologies, according to an interview with The New York Times, and lessons taught on said shape-shifting school bus will focus on STEM education (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).
However, not all changes seem to be positive. There's no doubt that the show looks different, and there's been some criticism surrounding the computer generated animation. Washington Post described its supposed lackluster as "an urban mural lost to a gleaming new condo development." And some people are upset because it looks as if Ms. Frizzle got a nose job, as well as a smoother, rounder face.
Regardless, imagination is in full throttle, and it's a treat for old fans and new ones alike (because your kids are bound to love it).
We can't wait for Sept. 29, but while you're on standby, binge-watch your favorite episodes from the original on Netflix.
Bus, do your stuff!
