Zo? Kravitz opens up about struggle with bulimia as a teen: 'It's a disease'
As the offspring of famous parents Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet who has managed to branch out into her own successful career, Zo? Kravitz is widely revered as the ultimate cool girl. But the 31-year-old actress and singer has revealed that navigating through life as the daughter of two Hollywood hipsters (who split up when Zo? was 2) was more difficult than it may have seemed.
The Big Little Lies star recently talked with Elle about her upbringing, opening up about her struggle to fit in as a teen — especially after moving from California to Miami to live with her dad when she was 11 years old.
“I didn’t like my new school. I didn’t feel like I fit in anywhere, and I was surrounded by an enormous amount of beauty and posturing,” Zo? said. “I was a chunky, perfectly normal-looking 15-year-old, but I had this remarkably beautiful skinny mother and a father who was dating a supermodel, and I felt short and ungainly.”
It was during that time that Zo? became bulimic — something that she’s previously opened up about, in a 2015 Complex interview — and ultimately moved to New York, where she was able to hide her struggles from her parents. Once they found out, however, she began therapy, which allowed her to understand more about her illness.
“I’m okay now,” she told Elle. “But I am very vigilant. It’s a disease, and I never let myself forget that.”
Zo? has admittedly grown a lot since then, as she’s built a career, gotten married and even found a family in her HBO series co-stars.
“I learned so much from my Big Little Lies family,” she said. “Much as everyone would like us to have been bitchy and competitive, we all got along so well.”
Her relationship with her father’s former fiancée, Nicole Kidman, has even evolved through the work.
“I was a grumpy teenager with her,” Kravitz recalled of the relationship. But now the two are now close.
