'Doctor Strange' Teaser Brings Magic to Marvel Cinematic Universe
By the hoary hosts of Hoggoth, Doctor Strange has arrived! Marvel’s master of the mystic arts, played by Benedict Cumberbatch using an American accent that takes a second to get used to, makes his grand entrance in a two-minute teaser trailer released Tuesday night on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
The clip sets up the broad strokes of the origin story: Dr. Stephen Strange, brilliant, but self-absorbed New York neurosurgeon, suffers a debilitating injury in an accident and can no longer function.

His search for a cure takes him around the globe and into the realm of the Ancient One (a bald Tilda Swinton), who introduces him to realities beyond ours.

Along the way, we are introduced to the rest of the all-star cast: Chiwetel Ejiofor, who plays Stange’s rival, Mordo.

Rachel McAdams, whose character has not been named, but appears to be a fellow hospital worker attending to the doctor… and eventual love interest?

And Mads Mikkelsen as the film’s villain, potentially longtime Strange comic-book adversary Dormammu, or perhaps an apostate of the Ancient One possessed by Dormammu. Whatever the case, he’s got some mads magical abilities.

As promised by director Scott Derrickson (Sinister), the film includes some trippy visuals of alternate dimensions.

And while Strange at one point insists he doesn’t believe in “fairy tales of chakras or energy or the power of belief,” he gets convinced otherwise.

Because by the trailer’s end, we finally meet the Sorcerer Supreme in his classic caped costume striding up the stairs of his base, the Sanctum Sanctorum, ready to confront some existential threat unlike any seen before in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Doctor Strange materializes in theaters on Nov. 4.
Here’s a look at the film’s poster, also released Tuesday:
