Rare and Wacky Behind-the-Scenes Photos of the 'Star Wars' Cantina

In the original Star Wars, director George Lucas introduced audiences to a wondrous alien hangout called the Mos Eisley Cantina (and got this song stuck in all of our heads forever). Today on Yahoo Movies, we’re taking a deep dive into the cantina scene, with behind-the-scenes stories from the people who were there. Here’s an accompanying gallery of photographs, some never before published, that show how the Star Wars cantina came together (and how the scene is still being preserved, researched, and recreated today).

Lucas, who envisioned the bustling alien cantina before he’d even come up with a plot for Star Wars, actually shot the scene twice: Once in London, and then the following year in Los Angeles, with a whole new cast of alien creatures. The finished scene is a combination of the two shoots, and the photographs show the breakdown between the makeups created by Stuart Freeborn’s English crew, and those made by Rick Baker’s American crew. Also featured in the gallery: Greedo in heels, the cantina band’s secret extra mouths, and a wacky piece of set decoration you’ve definitely never noticed.
