Ewan McGregor Is Game for an Obi-Wan Kenobi Movie or Two
If the Star Wars universe needs some more Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ewan McGregor is ready. McGregor, who played the role of Luke and Anakin Skywalker’s Jedi mentor in the prequels, has once again expressed his enthusiasm for bringing Obi-Wan back to the screen, perhaps in his own movie.
“I’ve always thought there was a story to tell between my last one and Alec Guinness’ first one. It would be fun to film that story now that I’m older,” said McGregor, who directed and starred in the new drama American Pastoral, to French Premiere (via Den of Geek). “I’d be the right age. I’m 45; Alec Guinness was what, 60? I could do two of them!”
Ever since Lucasfilm announced its intention to create the Star Wars anthology (which so far include this year’s Rogue One and a Han Solo movie slated for 2018), rumors have swirled that an Obi-Wan solo film was under consideration. For his part, McGregor has always been game. This past March, the actor told Collider that he would “very much” like to make a movie — or even a trilogy — about Obi-Wan’s adventures between Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope (in which the role was originated by Guinness).
“I don’t know how long he’s in the desert there, but it’s got to be 20 or 30 years,” McGregor said of Obi-Wan’s “lost” years between the films. (See the interview below.)
However, McGregor has also made it clear that this idea comes from him and not Lucasfilm. “They’ve never approached me about it,” he told Collider in April. And speaking to Premiere more recently, he joked that every time he talks about making an Obi-Wan movie, “it seems as though I’m begging for work!”
While the studio continues to weigh its Obi-Wan options, fans have eagerly contributed their own ideas about Ben Kenobi’s Tatooine adventures. Examples include this fake teaser for an Obi-Wan film created out of footage from McGregor’s film Last Days in the Desert; this sculpture of Obi-Wan as a desert warrior; the puppet Web series “Ben in the Desert”; and the 2013 novel Kenobi, part of the Star Wars expanded universe (now known as the Legends canon). Surely there’s enough fodder in there for at least one Ewan McGregor movie?
