Halle Berry Does Her Best Liam Neeson in First 'Kidnap' Trailer

In 2008’s Taken (and its two increasingly ludicrous sequels), Liam Neeson proved to bad guys worldwide that, before snatching an innocent child, they should first make sure that his or her parent isn’t a tough-as-nails killing machine. It’s a lesson that would have benefited the criminals of Kidnap, who — as evidenced by its first trailer — make the oh-so-stupid decision to grab a boy from a playground, only to wind up becoming the prey of Halle Berry’s fast and furious mother.
Directed by Luis Prieto (responsible for 2012’s English-language remake of Nicolas Winding Refn’s film Pusher), Kidnap hews closely to Taken’s bare-bones, B-movie premise, with Berry’s parent forced to pursue the car driven by those who’ve grabbed her innocent boy. The kidnapping takes place while Berry and her child play a game of Marco Polo, but it’s hard to believe that this frenzied film will have much to say about the plight of losing sight of your kid in crowded public spaces. Rather, from this initial promo, it seems the focus will be on a frazzled and increasingly fearsome Berry rampaging down highways and through police stations with terrified mama-bear rage.
If it has any hope of elevating its leading lady to the sort of iconic avenging-angel stature that Taken did for Neeson, Kidnap will have to give Berry at least one unforgettably cheesy-awesome bit of speechifying and/or derring-do.
