Meet Scott Derrickson, the Horror Helmer Behind One of Marvel's Next Big Blockbusters
Horror director Scott Derrickson’s had a scarily successful career: In the last ten years, the 37-year-old filmmaker — whose latest release, Deliver Us From Evil, is in theaters now — has been responsible for such hits as The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005) and Sinister (2012). As a result, he was recently tapped to direct the big-screen adaptation of Marvel Comic’s Dr. Strange, one of the most eagerly anticipated comic-book movies in years. Not bad for a guy whose first major credit was a straight-to-video Hellraiser sequel.
In this exclusive Yahoo Movie Show interview, Derrickson talks about the highs and lows of his directing career, and reveals some of the lessons he’s learned from working on both low-budget horror flicks and big-studio spectacles like 2008’s The Day the Earth Stood Still remake — a film even Derrickson admits was mired down by lackluster special effects. “After that experience, I was very determined that whatever movie I would make next, it would be my movie,” he tells Yahoo Movie Show in this refreshingly frank interview.
