Logan, the third (and, reportedly, final) solo outing for Hugh Jackman as Marvel’s adamantium-clawed mutant Wolverine, has been teasing fans with daily cast and set photos, all of which have provided a pretty strong idea about the forthcoming film’s tone and style. Those notions have now been confirmed — thrillingly — by the film’s first trailer (watch it above), which suggests that Jackman and director James Mangold’s latest take on the character will be an X-Men film like no other.

The clip is set to Johnny Cash’s Spartan, mournful cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” — a fitting musical choice for a film about an aged Wolverine who, in an unspecified future time when mutants have become extinct, is now a scarred loner who grimaces when he puts on a shirt (so much for his swift healing powers), and who lives amidst industrial ruin. His only acquaintance appears to be a now aged Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart), although that seems to change with the arrival of a young girl. By the looks of things, she’s a new, world-altering mutant — “She’s like you,” Xavier tells Logan. “Very much like you.” — and who is thus likely the target of Boyd Holbrook’s tattooed villain Donald Pierce and his caravan of armed Rogues.

Building to a crescendo of bloody violence, the first Logan trailer indicates that Mangold’s upcoming take on the character — inspired by the comic-book mini-series “Old Man Logan,” and evoking the post-apocalyptic video game masterpiece “The Last of Us” — will focus on Wolverine’s slow transformation back into the hero he once was before his world fell apart, as well as his evolution into the protective head of a new surrogate mutant family. You can watch the gripping promo above; the film slashes into theaters on March 3, 2017.
