Kristen Wiig Reacts to Bill Murray's 'Ghostbusters 3' Endorsement
This past weekend in Toronto, man about world Bill Murray weighed in on his dream casting for a potential all-female Ghostbusters 3, suggesting actresses Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Linda Cardellini and Emma Stone as his first-round picks. Today, at the press junket for her new film The Skeleton Twins, we asked Wiig, who sat down with us, alongside costar Bill Hader, her feelings about Murray’s endorsement.
“That’s very flattering,” Wiig answered coyly. “I guess they’re making one from what I hear, which is pretty great."
Then came the prodding.
"I don’t want to pressure you,” Hader intervened. “But you should do it… And you should have a friend, who’s like a guy, who has to carry around your proton pack.” Hey, if all the Ghostbusters are women, there should be a couple guys in supporting roles, right? We suggested he could take the Annie Potts role. “Andy Potts!” Wiig fired back.
Reminded that this was kind of a big deal, the Saturday Night Live legend–turned–original Ghostbuster offering his endorsement, Wiig’s resolve began to crumble: “I will do whatever Bill Murray tells me to,” she said.
The voice of her publicist can be heard from an adjoining room: “That will run everywhere.”
“I know,” replied Wiig. “That’s why I said it.”
Rumors of a Ghostbusters 3 movie have been circulating for 20 years — and took another step towards reality after recent reports that Wiig’s Bridesmaids director Paul Feig may helm an all-female sequel. Here’s hoping the two are reunited — soon — on a project that audiences (and even Bill Murray) really want to see happen.
The Skeleton Twins opens Friday.
