Mark Hamill Talks Return to Joker Role for 'The Killing Joke'

Mark Hamill, who made a name for himself in some space western I can’t remember the name of, has often been the voice of the Joker in different animated Batman projects dating back to the early ’90s. His take on the Clown Prince of Crime has been revered by fans and critics alike but has been less frequent in recent years. So, people got excited when it was announced he was returning to the role for the upcoming animated movie, Batman: The Killing Joke.

He talked about coming back to the fold in a behind-the-scenes featurette. “Every time I do this part, I let the script tell me what kind of Joker he needs to be,” he said. ”If people really want to see a nasty, vile Joker, this is the one.”

Published in 1988, The Killing Joke, by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland, is one of the most beloved Batman graphic novels of all time. It gives an origin story for the Joker that, while unofficial, has become perhaps the most popular one. We’ll leave it up to you if you want to know more about the plot, but just know that much like how The Dark Knight Returns shaped Batman stories for years to come, so did The Killing Joke for the Joker.

Hamill isn’t the only Batman actor who will be coming back for another go. Kevin Conroy’s deep velvety tones will be lent to Batman once again, and Tara Strong will be back as Batgirl. Also joining the main cast is Ray Wise as Commissioner Gordon. The Killing Joke will be released later this year after it premieres at San Diego Comic-Con.
