‘The Fate of the Furious’ Trailer: Vin Diesel’s Dom Is Breaking Bad in the New Sequel

Just last week, the eighth installment in the Fast & Furious franchise got a new, nonnumerical name — The Fate of the Furious. And now it’s got a new trailer to rev fans’ engines. Watch it above.

Directed by F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton), The Fate of the Furious will see the return of many familiar faces in our beloved hot-rod crew, including Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto, Michelle Rodriguez as Letty Ortiz, Tyrese Gibson as Roman Pearce, Ludacris as Tej Parker, and Dwayne Johnson as Luke Hobbs, the straight-arrow DSS agent. (Johnson also created some noise of his own during production when he called unnamed costars “candy asses” on Instagram.) They’ll be joined by new cast members Scott Eastwood, Helen Mirren, and Charlize Theron, who’s playing a villain named Cipher.

Until now, plot details have been scarce, but the first trailer makes it clear that the bad guy in this new caper may be none other than Dom himself. The family patriarch appears to betray his crew during a wrecking-ball-accented opening heist, all at the behest of Theron, the puppet master behind the new scheme. “Your family is about to go up against the only thing they can’t handle — you,” she says.

All this leads to scenes of Hobbs in the clink, where he turns out to be cellmates with old foe Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) and Kurt Russell’s Mr. Nobody, who describes Cipher as “the very definition of high-tech terrorism.” Along the way, the crew plays a rubber-burning version of tug o’ war, drag races in Havana, and speeds along the glaciers in Iceland, where they face off against a … submarine? “We’re going to need a bigger truck!” says Hobbs.

Also, Dom makes out with Cipher, and we’re guessing Letty might have something to say about that.

The Fate of the Furious picks up at a key inflection point in the blockbuster series. Furious 7 was a monster at the 2014 box office, earning over $1.5 billion worldwide and winning raves for both the expected death-defying highs and some more poignant, emotional ones. Even as our band of high-octane outlaws were driving sports cars out of airplanes and through Dubai skyscrapers, they also had to say a stirring farewell to longtime costar Paul Walker, who was killed in an unrelated car crash midway through production in 2013. How will the series carry on without Walker’s Brian O’Connor, the surfer-boy yin to Toretto’s muscle-car yang? It’s one of the many questions Fate will have to answer when it premieres in theaters on April 14.
