It may be a tale as old as time, but for Disney’s animated Beauty and the Beast, 2016 is a particularly special year: the film’s 25th anniversary. To celebrate, Disney is announcing the release of the Signature Collection Edition of Beauty and the Beast. The new edition (available September 6 on Digital HD and Disney Movies Anywhere, and September 20 on Blu-ray and DVD) will include four versions of the animated classic, new special features, and a sneak peek at next year’s live-action Beauty and the Beast starring Emma Watson as Belle. The first animated film to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Picture, Beauty and the Beast opened in theaters in November 1991. The Signature Collection Edition includes that original theatrical version of the film, but also offers fans an extended cut including the deleted song sequence “Human Again” (sung by the transformed servants in the Beast’s castle). There’s also a sing-a-long version, and for those who opt for Digital HD, a work-in-progress version that shows how the film came together with pencil tests and storyboards.

Among the many new special features are a behind-the-scenes look at the voice recording sessions; a documentary about Walt Disney’s two failed attempts to adapt Beauty and the Beast between the 1930s and 1950s; and a roundtable of Disney composers (including Moana’s Lin-Manuel Miranda and Frozen’s Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez) performing songs and revealing how the music of Beauty and the Beast influenced their own work. The Digital HD version also has five hours of bonus material from previous releases, including deleted scenes and an alternate version of “Be Our Guest.” As gifts go, it’s almost as good as getting your own library in an enchanted castle.
