17-year-old girl arrested in connection to July homicide

DENVER (KDVR) — The Aurora Police Department’s Major Crime Homicide unit arrested a 17-year-old girl in connection to a July homicide that occurred near the 1400 block of South Uravan Street.

Detectives made the arrest Friday after being notified that she was in custody in another jurisdiction for an unrelated case. The shooting took place on July 6 at a park in the 1400 block of South Uravan Street.

She was arrested on:

  • One count of first-degree murder

  • 10 counts of attempted first-degree murder

  • 10 counts of attempted first-degree assault

  • One count of felony menacing

  • One count of illegal discharge of a firearm

  • One count of tampering with physical evidence

  • One count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a minor

The Aurora agency responded to the shooting around 9:15 p.m. A fight broke out during a party that was followed by gunshots.

Two 14-year-old girls and one 15-year-old girl were taken to local hospitals with injuries. One of the 14-year-olds succumbed to her injuries after arriving at the hospital. She has since been identified as Kamiaya Cleveland.

A teenager who was at that party told FOX31’s Vicente Arenas that information about the park party was spread on social media. One teen who was at the party said there was trouble at the party early on.

“I left, and then a few minutes later people texted me talking about are you OK?  They said a fight broke out and there’s been a shooting,” said the teen, who did not want to be identified.

There were at least 100 girls in one area, according to the Struggle of Love Foundation. A 14-year-old and a 15-year-old girl were also hurt during the shooting.

Investigators continue to search for information on the case and have identified no other suspects as of Tuesday. Anyone with any information about this shooting is asked to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.
