25-year-old hurt in early morning Champaign shooting: Police

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — A man from Champaign is recovering in the hospital after he was shot early Thursday morning.

The shooting happened on Mattis Avenue near John Street at 12:34 a.m. Responding officers found the 25-year-old victim at the scene with gunshot wounds on his upper leg, which police say were potentially life-threatening.

Officers and personnel from the Champaign Fire Department immediately rendered medical aid to the victim until he could be taken from the scene to the hospital. He is listed in stable condition at this time.

Officials from the Champaign Police Department said the investigation so far indicated that the man was standing in the courtyard of his apartment complex when a man approached him, opened fire and then left.

Officers are still canvassing the area to look for witnesses and video cameras that may have seen or recorded the shooting or the suspect.
