PARMA, Ohio (WJW) — A Cleveland man charged in an alleged drunk driving crash into a Parma home that injured a 4-year-old girl, has been indicted by a Cuyahoga County grand jury.

Police responded just after 9:30 p.m. on July 4 to the corner of West 54th Street and Velma Avenue, according to a police report released on Tuesday.

Zachary M. Pettry, 32, of Cleveland, was indicted Wednesday on the following charges: aggravated vehicular assault, vehicular assault, driving while under the influence, vandalism and criminal damaging.

Police found Pettry’s Ford Taurus in the tree lawn of the home, and the 4-year-old girl lying on the ground nearby, surrounded by several people giving her first aid. She had a large laceration above her right eye and was bleeding heavily from her head, according to the report.

Firefighters transported her to a hospital. There’s been no update on her condition.

Officers found Pettry curled up atop the dashboard, bleeding heavily from a large cut on his forehead that had exposed his skull, according to a report. While working to stop the bleeding, an officer noticed alcohol on his breath.

Pettry had difficulty answering officers’ questions and told one officer he thought he was in “Florida,” according to a report. While on his way to a hospital, he told police he had been drinking at a friend’s house.

Witnesses who were driving on West 54th Street told police Pettry was to blame for the crash. They said they saw his sedan traveling north “at a high rate of speed” in the center turning lane, passing other vehicles. It then rear-ended an SUV, causing it to spin into a tree.

The two people in that SUV told police they were OK, but the driver complained of back pain, according to a report.

Patrolmen found a pill bottle containing suspected Adderall and an alcoholic seltzer inside Pettry’s vehicle, according to the report.

Pettry did not enter a plea during his arraignment last week, Parma Municipal Court records show. He posted 10% of a $100,000 bond.
