72 new vehicles recovered after cargo theft from New Orleans’ Norfolk Southern rail yard

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Since 2022, nearly 80 new cars have been stolen from the Norfolk Southern rail yard in New Orleans. Most of them have since been recovered, and over a dozen people have been arrested.

The Louisiana State Police reported its Insurance Fraud unit and the Auto Theft Unit of the New Orleans Field Office began investigating the first case of the cargo thefts in November of 2022. At the rail yard, which serves as off-loading and storage for cars destined for Gulf South dealerships, 32 cars disappeared in one week.

Then, by May of 2023, the total number of cars stolen had grown to 79, with an estimated value of $4 million.

The LSP reported that by the end of June in 2023, 72 of those cars had been recovered. This came after a joint investigation with several law enforcement agencies.

  • Darial May, 25, of New Orleans

  • Jonathan Gonzales, 25, of New Orleans

  • Norman Andrews, 24, of New Orleans

  • Erin Murthil Jr., 21, of New Orleans

  • Quintrell Brown, 20 , of New Orleans

  • Gerrin Brown, 29, of New Orleans

  • Mervyn Lucas, 29, of Gretna

  • Desmond Taylor, 27, of Abbeville

  • Malik Mack, 27, of Belle Chasse

  • Mister Mackey, 22, of Slidell

  • Leshonda Stewart, 34, of Chalmette

  • Lance Smith, 31, of River Ridge
