Arizona election 2024: What to know about federal, state and local races

In the election that ends Nov. 5, Arizona's voters will elect a new U.S. senator, members of Congress, a new state Legislature, state utility and water regulators, county executives and supervisors, mayors, council members, school board members and justices of the peace.
They will decide ballot measures on abortion rights, immigration, primary voting and, in Maricopa County, a transportation tax.
Voters will get a chance to decide which judges will be retained in the state's most populous counties and elected in the state's smaller counties.
If you are a U.S. citizen and are 18 years old by Election Day, you are eligible to vote.

Here's what to know about the candidates and the process.
Presidential election
Purple state: Arizona is one of seven battleground states where the 2024 presidential election likely will be won or lost. Both candidates are targeting Arizona in their campaigns.
US Senate
Open seat: U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego and former television broadcaster Kari Lake are battling for Arizona's open seat in the U.S. Senate, to succeed Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, I-Ariz., who announced in March she would not seek a second six-year term.
US House of Representatives
9 congressional districts: Tight races are expected in the general election, notably in the 1st Congressional District in northeast Phoenix and the northeast Valley and the 6th Congressional District in southern Arizona.
State issues
Turning point? Arizona voters will decide on abortion access and a host of other measures in 2024. Democrats could win control of a chamber of the Legislature.
Arizona Senate
Slim margin: Republicans control the Arizona Senate by a 16-14 margin, but Democrats say they have a shot to take control.
Arizona House
Taking control: Republicans control the state House of Representatives by a 31-29 margin. Democrats are saying, yet again, that they change that.
Maricopa County
Leadership races up for grabs: Voters will decide the Board of Supervisors, treasurer, assessor and recorder in the 2024 election.
Arizona school races
K-12 races: Voters will be asked to OK school bond and override requests, decide school board members and select the next Maricopa County school superintendent.
Justice system roles on ballot
Judicial retention: Two of the most powerful justice-related jobs in Maricopa County, sheriff and county attorney, are on the ballot, as well as justices from several courts, including the Arizona Supreme Court, up for retention.
