Bat tests positive for rabies at Bandelier National Monument

LOS ALAMOS, N.M. (KRQE) – A bat found dead in the Bandelier National Monument tested positive for rabies, marking the first confirmed rabies case of the year for northern New Mexico.

The dead bat was found in the Cottonwood Picnic Area on July 7. Anyone who touched or had contact with any bat near the area in early July is encouraged to contact their healthcare provider or the New Mexico Department of Health. Also, if you find yourself near a bat, dead or alive, do not touch it.
