Ben Affleck Talks About 'Gone Girl' Nude Scene
Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike in ‘Gone Girl’
One of the best-kept, least essential secrets about Gone Girl is now out in the open: Ben Affleck gets naked. At one point in the film (out Oct. 3), director David Fincher gives audiences a very brief, full-frontal glimpse of his star. MTV’s Josh Horowitz broached the subject with Affleck in a new interview, asking if he’d ever revealed so much of himself onscreen before. “It’s ironic, because David said to me from the beginning, this is a warts and all movie. It can have no vanity. You have to see the naked underbelly of this character,” Affleck explained. “It’s gotta be like in Europe, they just don’t give a s—- about any of that stuff, and they just play real people, you know? And so that was the spirit of the thing.” (It’s worth noting this isn’t the first time Fincher has used strategic flashes of male genitalia. In Fight Club, Tyler Durden is shown splicing smutty snippets into family-friendly films.)
Warning, possible spoilers to follow:
Affleck’s exceptional performance as Nick Dunne, a man whose life is torn apart by the strange disappearance of his wife, deserves to be talked about on its own terms. Still, his nude scene is notable, if only because it’s still so rare for male Hollywood stars to completely strip down on camera. (It’s rare for female stars not to at some point). And while Gone Girl’s Rosamund Pike also bares all, it’s an unusually equitable amount of nudity: She’s no more naked than her male co-star. (Emily Ratajkowski’s nude scene is a different, and more typical, story.)
Judging from his MTV interview, Affleck doesn’t mind that big reveal is getting some attention. “It’s IMAX penis… it looks better in 3D,” he joked.
