Biden campaign hosts virtual ‘Rock ‘n Doo-Wop Party’ to appeal to seniors
President Biden’s reelection campaign is hosting a virtual ‘Rock ‘n Doo-Wop Party’ with celebrity musical guests Wednesday, as part of its initiative to court seniors ahead of November.
In an announcement first obtained by The Hill, the campaign plans to host the event with leading senior advocate groups to mark the anniversary of the Older Americans Act, which President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law in 1965 to provide social services to support seniors.
The party will include musical performances by “Dancing in The Street” singer Martha Reeves, as well as singers Gene Chandler, Gary “U.S.” Bonds, Jay Siegel, Peggy March, LaLa Brooks and Johnny Contardo.
The Biden campaign last month launched a new program, “Seniors for Biden-Harris,” to reach out to older voters through events like bingo and pickleball.
Wednesday’s event will also include remarks from Richard Fiesta, executive director of the Alliance for Retired Americans, and Max Richtman, president and CEO of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare. Jon Bauman, president of Social Security Works PAC and vice chair of the DNC Seniors Council, will emcee.
“While Donald Trump has called time and time again to cut Social Security and Medicare, and is proudly running to make seniors pay more out-of-pocket for health care and prescription drugs, President Biden has taken historic action to lower costs,” Bauman said in a statement.
Seniors, who typically turn out in large numbers to vote compared to other demographics, are a pivotal voting bloc in 2024.
Biden polled 5 points ahead of Trump for people 65 and older, with 45 percent saying they would vote for the incumbent compared to the former president’s 40 percent in May’s New York Times/ Siena College national poll.
