Billie Eilish reacts after teens killed in crash headed to her concert: 'Sending so much love'
Singer Billie Eilish sent her condolences to the families and friends of two Missouri concertgoers who were killed during a multi-state pursuit of a man who allegedly kidnapped a 1-year-old baby and its mother.
Lucy Yeates and Kole Cunningham, both age 18 from Kearney, Missouri, were killed while on their way to Eilish's concert in Omaha, Nebraska, according to a GoFundMe organized by Mckinley Yeates, who identified herself as Lucy Yeates' cousin.
"My sweet cousins and their friend got into a fatal car accident on their way to Omaha to see Billie Eilish in concert. Sadly Kole, and Lucy didn’t make it," Mckinley Yeates wrote on the fundraiser page.
Aubrey Yeates, the 18-year-old sister of Lucy Yeates, was also involved in the accident and is currently hospitalized after undergoing "much care and procedures," according to the GoFundMe, which has raised over $17,110.
Eilish learned of the teenagers' deaths when a fan account on Instagram called @billieeilishtours shared the GoFundMe. The "bad guy" singer commented on the post, saying, "Sending so much love to the families. so heartbreaking.”
Eilish performed at CHI Health Center Arena in Omaha on Sunday night.
Crash: 2 Missouri 18-year-olds killed during pursuit of man who kidnapped baby, mother
What happened to the Kearney, Missouri teenagers?
The Fremont County Sheriff's Office in southwestern Iowa first received a report just after 6 a.m. on Sunday about a hospitalized woman who had experienced a domestic assault, the agency said in a news release. The woman told deputies that an acquaintance had kidnapped her and her 1-year-old baby across the state line in Nebraska and that he was "suicidal and homicidal."
Fremont County deputies, along with troopers with the Iowa State Patrol, began pursuing the man who was driving with the baby in a 2023 Kia Sorento, the sheriff's office said. At some point during the pursuit, the man drove the Kia across the state line into Missouri, according to the release.
Soon after entering Missouri, the Kia collided with a 2013 Ford Focus on Interstate 29 in a crash that triggered another collision between a Volvo semi-truck and a Chevy Tahoe driven by a Fremont County deputy, the sheriff's office said. The alleged kidnapper driving the Kia was killed, as were Lucy Yeates and Kole Cunningham, in the Ford Focus, KMBC-TV reported, citing local law enforcement.
The 1-year-old baby was rescued from the burning Kia and airlifted to a hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, with non-life-threatening injuries, the sheriff's office said.
Authorities have not identified the deceased alleged kidnapper.
Kearney Mayor Randy Pogue: 'I offer my deepest sympathies'
In addition to Eilish, Kearney Mayor Randy Pogue also offered condolences to the families of Lucy Yeates and Kole Cunningham, saying their deaths have "shaken our community."
"In times of sorrow, I offer my deepest sympathies to the Cunningham and Yeates families," Pogue wrote in a Facebook post shared on Monday. "May courage and hope be the steadfast companions of both families, friends, and all who mourn. Praying for you all," he said.
The Kearney School District told KMBC News that the Yeates and Cunningham were class of 2024 graduates and not current students.
"The Kearney High School team is aware of this tragic event and the counselors are prepared to provide additional guidance and support as needed," according to a district statement obtained by the Kansas City, Missouri-based TV station.
