Boil water advisory lifted for East Bank of New Orleans, Algiers Point

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Officials with the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans have announced that the boil water advisory issued for the entire East Bank of New Orleans and Algiers Point has been lifted.

The advisory was initially issued on Tuesday, Aug. 6, after a drop in water pressure due to a power failure.

On Wednesday, Aug. 7, Entergy New Orleans reported that “A Mylar ballon contacted a powerline near the Carrollton plant at approximately 7 p.m., which created a very brief power fluctuation—causing pumps to be tripped offline. SWBNO crews were able to switch over to backup power and get additional pumps online, but not before the water pressure fell below the threshold for issuing a precautionary boil water advisory.

The SWBNO also reported that an employee was injured while working to get the pumps back online.

On Thursday, Aug. 8, SWBNO officials said the first round of testing was completed for 90 water samples from the East Bank and 10 samples from the West Bank.

They said based on the results, the advisory was lifted for the West Bank, as all 10 samples came back clear.

SWBNO officials said of the 90 samples collected from the East Bank, 88 came back clear, and two tested positive for coliform.

According to the SWBNO, the two samples that tested positive for coliform were from the Tulane-Gravier and Hollygrove areas. The water in both areas, however, has since been declared to be safe to use.

SWBNO officials said that coliform itself is usually not harmful but could have been an indication that other harmful bacteria was present.

A second round of water testing was performed following the initial results, and the advisory was then lifted for East Bank residents after tests came back negative for contamination.

Residents who didn’t use their tap water during the advisory are asked to flush their plumbing by running the water for several minutes before resuming normal usage.
