Branford Marsalis named new artistic director of New Orleans’ Ellis Marsalis Center for Music

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Branford Marsalis has been named the artistic director the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

Leaders with the EMCM announced that an “international musical legend” would be returning to New Orleans to guide creative directions and programs at Musicians Village Cultural Center in the Ninth Ward.

Branford, a Grammy-winning jazz musician, is set to replace his father, Ellis Marsalis, in his former role.

Ellis, who was also a jazz artist, died in 2020 due to complications from COVID-19. Ellis was a jazz artist, educator, founder of the University of New Orleans jazz studies program and a partner in the development of EMCM.

Leaders with the EMCM said that the center, located in the Musicians Village, serves as a community hub that provides educational opportunities and programming to the Ninth Ward neighborhood.

The center has been in operation since 2012 and offers a performance hall, recording studio, technology center, listening library, dance studio and teaching facilities.
