Building under construction collapses in winds
Jan. 6—HIGH POINT — Work crews had just installed the trusses on a commercial building under construction in north High Point when a winter storm with wind gusts nearing 40 mph cut through the area Monday.
When developer Mark Lindsay checked on the construction site on Eastchester Drive later, he was stunned to find that the building frame had collapsed from the high winds.
"It even took our sign that had 4-by-4 posts and snapped them in half," Lindsay told The High Point Enterprise. "When the insurance adjuster came out yesterday, she was just shocked. She said it looked like a tornado hit it. The wind just laid it flat down."
Lindsay said that in his real estate career he's never seen anything like it.
The construction site cleanup and rebuilding has set the project back three weeks to a month, he said.
The building will become the home of High Point Pediatrics and Lindsay's real estate and construction firm office. The site for the 12,000-square-foot building is in the 1900 block of Eastchester between Deep River Road and Wendover Avenue.
"Right now it's just a giant game of pick-up-sticks," he said. "But we expect to be back on track pretty quickly."
