Burke County man arrested for allegedly assaulting officers during Jan. 6 riot: DOJ

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A Burke County man was arrested for allegedly assaulting law enforcement officers during the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

According to court documents, Gregory Peck Jr., 51, of Connelly Springs entered the Capitol grounds on January 6, 2021, via the West Front.

Documents said Peck used a flagpole to hit a Metropolitan Police Department officer. The alleged assault was captured on a body camera.

Peck later sprayed another officer with an orange substance and grabbed another by his jacket collar while the officer struggled to breathe. Throughout the assault, body camera footage captured multiple rioters yelling “He can’t breathe!” and “Let him go!”.

Peck was charged with two felony offenses: assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers using a deadly or dangerous weapon and civil disorder.

In addition to the felonies, Peck was charged with several misdemeanors including:

• Entering and remaining in restricted grounds or buildings

• Disorderly and disruptive conduct in restricted grounds or buildings

• Engaging in physical violence in restricted ground or buildings

• Disorderly conduct in a Capitol building or grounds

• Engaging in physical violence on Capitol grounds or buildings with a deadly or dangerous weapon

In the 43 months since the riot, more than 1,488 individuals have been charged in nearly all 50 states for crimes related to the breach of the U.S. Capitol.

Nearly 550 individuals were charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement.

The investigation remains ongoing.
