Call the Midwife's Helen George has weighed in on rumours of her co-star Miriam Margolyes departing the BBC show.

Speaking to press at the National Television Awards (NTAs) red carpet tonight (September 11), George questioned if speculation about Margolyes' exit was even true.

"I don't know if that's the truth," the Trixie Aylward actor said, hinting that Margolyes won't actually be leaving the role of Mother Mildred behind just yet.

"I just think she's not been in it for a while," George continued, adding: "I think some of the tabloids might've got the wrong end of the stick."

While she was aware of the reports, George admitted that she had only just heard about Margolyes' alleged departure.

"I literally just heard that 30 seconds ago," she said. "I think it's bollocks, to be fair."

Reminiscing about her best memories from set with Margolyes, George confirmed there were some "pretty filthy" anecdotes surrounding the famously potty-mouthed comedian that she couldn't share.

"She does eat an onion for breakfast, that is true," George continued, confirming that Margolyes starts the day with a raw onion, as she revealed on multiple occasions.

Meanwhile, George reassured Call the Midwife fans, announcing that Trixie "is returning to Nonnatus House" after joining her husband Matthew for a fresh start in New York, teasing "bigger and better" things are on the horizon.

The show's social media accounts have recently shared that the cast is back filming after the summer break. Call the Midwife is expected to return to our screens for a Christmas special this festive season, with season 14 following in 2025.

Call the Midwife airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
