Community ‘astonished’ after assault near Cascade Valley Metro Park

AKRON, Ohio (WJW) – People walking the trails in the Valley View area of the Cascade Valley Metro Park in Akron reacted to the news that a woman was assaulted near the trailhead Monday morning.

“It’s astonishing that something has already happened. This is a recently opened park, not everyone knows about this area yet,” said resident Jacquee Ostroski.

According to Captain Mike Miller with the Akron Police Department, the 33-year-old woman was walking the trails around 9:15 a.m.

“This young woman had just come from the restroom area and the guy grabbed her from behind,” said Miller.

Police say three women heard the victim screaming, so they rushed over to help, even hitting the suspect in the head with a rock.

“A lot of people see things and don’t get involved. There are a number of risks involved. In spite of the risks, they stepped in and we applaud those ladies for their efforts,” said Miller.
