Community Update: Green Bay Police Chief talks gel-blaster guns in the city and need for crossing guards

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – Green Bay Police Chief Chris Davis joined Local 5 and talked about multiple topics including the increase in calls related to gel-blaster guns and the need for crossing guards.

Chief Davis talked about the gel-blaster guns that are becoming more popular in Green Bay. Davis said that there have been situations where people are shooting these at each other or even random people.

He said that these incidents have caused a lot of headaches for the department. Last year there were around a dozen or so calls regarding these gel-blasters according to Davis.

However, this year there have been around 50 calls in relation to these incidents. The department launched an awareness campaign targeting parents.

Recently the department held some town hall sessions. Some of the topics the community brought forward were around traffic safety and public safety.

With school nearing a return, the department is looking for crossing guards for the upcoming school year. Davis said this helps the department because it means a police officer can help with other things rather than be stationed as a crossing guard.
