Your commute might change soon if you take these 2 busy Denver roads

DENVER (KDVR) — The city and county of Denver announced Monday that changes will soon be coming for two of Denver’s busiest streets in an effort to improve safety and reduce crashes.

These changes will be implemented along Federal Boulevard and Alameda Avenue over the next 18 months, according to the city.

Denverites spend almost 2 hours on travel every day, report finds

Some of the things people might notice if they take these routes include:

  1. New speed limit signs and speed feedback signs

  2. Changing the timing of red lights to better match the speed limit

  3. Engineering red lights at night to make them change only when a car is at the intersection

  4. Expanding the use of “leading pedestrian interval” where pedestrians get a head start in the intersection before the light turns green

  5. New speed enforcement devices such as speed vans and automated speed cameras

The city said similar tactics implemented on West Colfax Avenue in 2020 have already helped improve safety by the number of deadly crashes by 71%.

The city chose Federal and Alameda because they are corridors in what it described as the “high injury network” where most serious and deadly crashes happen. On Federal, the improvements will be focused between 52nd Avenue and West Floyd Avenue, and on Alameda, crews will focus on Sheridan to Havana Street.

The Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure also published a new set of policies aimed at improving road safety on roads across the city.

Many of the policies are similar to what is going to be implemented on Federal and Alameda and are also aimed at improving other things, such as people’s experience with public transit at all times of the day.
